Oswego Senior Center Asks Village for Increase in Funding

Mar 18, 2014 07:21PM, Published by Steven Jack, Categories: Today, Community

Budget shortfalls at the Oswego Senior Center had the center’s executive director appearing before the Oswego Village Board Tuesday night asking for a slight increase in village funding in the coming fiscal year.

Bob Wyngard said his next Senior Center budget will come up about $7,500 short, and he is asking for an increase in the village’s $35,000 annual contribution to $38,500. The village of Oswego is in the final stages of preparing its 2015 budget.

Wyngard has made the same request in the last two years, and been denied by the Village Board.

“I guess I’m saying this year I have better reasons,” Wyngard said.

The center is facing an $8,000 cut to its food budget from the Agency on Aging — Northeastern Illinois. The Senior Center offers meals to area seniors two days per week. The center is also facing $2,800 in additional insurance payments on its van.

Village Trustee Terry Michels expressed concern that Wyngard was appearing so late in the village’s budget process, which typically begins in January.

“I personally have shared that our budget process begins in January,” Michels told Wyngard. “… If someone doesn’t know, the question needs to be asked.”

Wyngard took personal responsibility for coming to the village so late in the budget process.

“There won’t be any more last minute,” he said.

Village Trustee Judy Sollinger, who in past years has advocated for increased Senior Center funding, again expressed her support.

“I do know they operate a tight budget. … We need to give that to them if we can fit it in our budget.,” she said.

Wyngard said he also plans to approach the center’s other local funding partners for possible budget increases.

The village of Oswego will take its final budget vote in April.
