Bambi Johnson, Spanish Teacher Bednarcik Junior High

Years with district: 36

Awards / Recognition: Built the junior high Spanish program

“When I met Bambi Johnson I was impressed by the level of knowledge, support, and care shared in her classroom setting. Learning was evident in every informal visit and student engagement was amazing. Students knew Spanish and were more confident with her support.”

— Principal Sharon Y. Alexander, Bednarcik Junior High School

Bambi Johnson began her teaching career in 1978, serving under superintendent John Bednarcik. She was hired by Thompson Junior High Principal Fred LaChance as a seventh grade language arts and seventh and eighth grade Spanish teacher. In 2002, she volunteered to move to Bednarcik Junior High, where she developed and opened the Spanish program. She continued to teach seventh and eighth grade Spanish at Bednarcik as well as strategic writing to seventh graders.

During her 36-year tenure, Johnson built the district’s junior high Spanish curriculum into the highly respected program it is today. She served as the junior high Spanish curriculum coordinator prior to it becoming a paid position and coached Thompson Junior High cheer- leaders from 1978 to 1980.

She treasures the 16 years she spent teaching under Principal Fred LaChance, who provided superior leadership, support, and friendship to his teachers. She also made many life-long teacher friends at Thompson. Another of her favorite memories was when she combined colleagues from both Thompson and Traughber to build a top-notch teaching staff and new Spanish program at Bednarcik.

Johnson plans to work on the “three R’s” in retirement: “resting” past 5 a.m. each morning, “reading” on her deck while sipping a leisurely cup of coffee, and “really enjoying” a large margarita with friends who stop to visit.
