Kids Are a Blank Slate; Parents Decide What's Written

Being a mother of two I’ve learned that kids do what they see not what you say.

When my daughter was almost 2 years old I had the worst potty mouth. You would think a person with a bachelor’s degree would have a larger vocabulary. I would be on the telephone with my friends using all the wrong words, and one day my little baby girl used one of those words!

Needless to say, that caused a huge pause in my conversation. A friend of mine told me when her son was about 2 years old he started repeating what she would say on the telephone. She decided to take the situation as an opportunity to teach.

My friend would pick up her phone and recite the alphabet and the numbers; sure enough, her son started saying the same thing. I learned a couple of things when my daughter repeated the potty word.

First, spending time with my kids should be technology and distraction free. Second, I have the ability to teach my kids how to behave by example. I guess it’s like having your own reality show and your kids tune in every day.

I think as moms we forget or misuse our power. We have these blank chalk boards (that’s what I call young children) and we decide what gets written.

Kids 2 Kids

The best way to know what your kids think is to ask them. This week’s question to my 7 year old son and 10 year old daughter is “If I (mom) had my own television show what would you (kid) call it?”

My daughter said “Prettiest Pamela” and my son said “The treat kid’s good show”. This tells me that my daughter is paying attention to my appearance and how I carry myself, and my son is watching my behavior and how I treat others.  Well, time for me to polish my nails and go volunteer at the school.

About me

I am an Oswego mom to two wonderful kids and the wife of the greatest man I know. I have written 3 children’s books all about my kids, the stories are true and the material is endless. I have a Bachelor’s Degree from Chicago State University and a Master’s Degree from DeVry’s Keller School of Management. You can catch me around town shopping, at the movies or volunteering at my kids' school
