Spending Time with Your Kids More Than Hanging out in the Same Room

When I lived in Chicago I had a great stylist who was so multi-talented that she stopped doing hair and became an actress.

I was so proud to see her on the big screen, but I was left without a stylist. A good friend of mine recommended her stylist. It was difficult to get an appointment because this stylist had a couple of celebrity clients, but once I got in we became friends and I had another great stylist.

My new stylist was in such great demand she started doing hair at her home on days the shop was closed. This was great for me because she lived five minutes from my house. My new stylist had a daughter that was 10 years old at the time and this little girl had everything a 10 year old girl could dream of — clothes, shoes, jewelry, game systems and TVs.

The only reason she didn’t have an iPhone was because they hadn't been invented!

One day I was leaving my stylist house to get some ice cream, and her daughter asked if she could go with me. Her mom said it was ok with her if it was ok with me.

As we were crossing the street the girl asked if I would hold her hand. I had forgotten she was only 10 because she dressed like a teenager.

While waiting for the ice cream I asked the child did she like the new TV she had gotten, and she said “no, not really, I would rather spend time with my mom than watch TV."

Even though I was not a mom then I learned how important it is to spend time with your kids, and I don’t mean be in the same room with them and everyone is doing their own thing. I mean talk to them, get to know their hopes dreams and aspirations.

This week my daughter and I went to get pedicures, ate at Jimmy Johns and did a little shopping at Justice. My husband and son went to a Chicago Bulls game. On Valentine’s Day my son took me out while my husband and daughter were at the Daddy Daughter Dance.

Even though the same gender parent has the most influence on a child, it’s important to switch it up sometimes. Kids need to know how to behave, and how they should be treated by the opposite gender.

Kid 2 Kid

The question to my kids this week is: What would be the perfect day out with your parents?

My daughter said she would like us to go to a Beyoncé concert with backstage passes, go to Jimmy Johns then come home and take a nap. My son said he would like to go explore a new state.

Well, time for me to plan that family vacation and check Stub Hub for the deal of the week.

 About me

I am an Oswego mom to two wonderful kids and the wife of the greatest man I know. I have written 3 children’s books all about my kids, the stories are true and the material is endless. I have a Bachelor’s Degree from Chicago State University and a Master’s Degree from DeVry’s Keller School of Management. You can catch me around town shopping, at the movies or volunteering at my kids' school.
