Sabrina Isela Chavez is a Kid Who Cares

Feb 22, 2015 05:09PM, Published by Steven Jack, Categories:

Name: Sabrina Isela Chavez

Grade: 10th

School: Oswego High School

What makes her a Kid Who Cares: From Sabrina's extensive involvement with the APRCC as Miss Teen Puerto Rico, coordinating local food drives, and volunteering countless hours to her community her level of compassion for the community and humanity at such a young age is exemplary and one worth emulating.

What is even more impressive is that her life has not been without challenge; at the age of 11 her mother was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Although severely traumatic for her, she did not hesitate to step up in her house and care for her twin brothers and get involved with the breast cancer awareness movement, participating in several Making Strides for Breast Cancer Events.

Today, at 16, she has shared her story countless times to several young girls, many of them Latinas. Sabrina has developed lessons and articulated the importance of being resilient, giving back to others, and the development of positive coping skills through challenging situations.

She is a Lead Teen Mentor for The Distinguished DIVAS, a community mentoring program that encourages young girls to develop core principles that include positive influence, values, achievement, and service, and she has spent countless hours leading discussions, planning events, organizing presentations, and mentoring our girls.

Along with her participation in the Distinguished DIVAS, she has spoken publicly about her experiences and has been a voice for friends who have endured bullying and depression. In total, she has accumulated well over 200 hours of community service, including two projects she initiated and executed successfully (a toy drive for children in hospitals impacting at least 50 children and a school supply drive where she donated over 500 books and supplies to a local elementary school with 600 students).

Sabrina has been involved in other activities such as Aurora’s Got Talent, Dance Fuze Studio, Zsa Zsa’s Boutique, Hesed House, Gigi’s Playhouse for Children with Down Syndrome, Feed My Starving Children, and nursing homes in the area. Recently, the City of Aurora’s Hispanic Heritage Advisory Board recognized Sabrina’s humanitarian and leadership service by awarding her the 2015 Youth Leadership and Service Award.
