Oswego Students Display Art in Chicago

Mar 08, 2015 10:05PM, Published by Steven Jack, Categories: Education, News

The artwork of 10 high school students from School District 308 is being featured in the Illinois High School Art Exhibition (IHSAE) at the Zhou B Art Center in Chicago. Their work was on display March 9 and could be included in a new exhibit at Chicago’s Ed Paschke Art Center.

“Each year the Illinois High School Art Exhibition offers an incredible opportunity for District 308 high school art students to participate in a competition that recognizes outstanding artwork,” said Michael Skura, fine arts division chair at Oswego High School. “Numerous art colleges and universities from throughout the nation are there to recruit and give out scholarships. More than 100 of the top art programs in the Chicago area participate and more than 500 works of are being showcased.”

Oswego High School students with artwork in the exhibit are Hanah Loeffelholz, Charlotte Benstine, Andrea Allen, and Alexis Buechele. Benstine brought home third place in the “3D” art category, and Loeffelholz won an honorable mention in “Drawing.” Loeffelholz and Allen both received scholarships.

OEHS participants are Jill Concepcion, Peter DeGuzman, Trevor Baedke, Daisy Rivera, Nathan VanGerpen, and Alexandria Rinehart. VanGerpen won an honorable mention in “Photography” and DeGuzman won third place in “Drawing.”

While visiting the IHSAE, Lionel Rabb, founder of the Ed Paschke Art Center, asked to select the work of 20 students for display in a new exhibit at Paschke. In addition to having their artwork featured in the exhibit, selected student artists will receive a monetary award.

The Paschke board of directors will make their selections on Wednesday, March 4, and will notify the IHSAE of their choices shortly thereafter. The Ed Paschke Art Center could also purchase one piece of art form the exhibit.

The possibility that the students’ work could be featured at the Ed Paschke Art Center is what IHSAE is all about, said John Zilewicz, Jr., IHSAE creator and exhibition director.

“The whole premise of our show is based on making connections,” Zilewicz said. “We’re connecting kids with colleges, post-secondary art opportunities, their peers, and additional exhibiting opportunities. We want students to see how things are interconnected, that one success leads to another.”

Sponsored by 60 colleges, the IHSAE displays the work of the most promising high school artists. Last year, participating colleges awarded just under $5 million in scholarships to 94 of the 142 students who submitted portfolios.
