New Village Attorney Selected to Represent Oswego

After the dismissal announced last week of Village Administrator Steve Jones, the village also is set to hire a new Village Attorney.

According to the Village Board's Tuesday night agenda, the Oswego firm of Mahoney, Silverman and Cross will be voted upon to take over representation of the village from Ottosen, Britz, Kelly, Cooper, Gilbert & DiNolfo. Attorney David Silverman will act as lead attorney for the village, said Village President-elect Gail Johnson.

Johnson said the village's contract with Village Attorney Karl
Ottosen was not renewed for several reason —the most significant being what she said was a lack of municipal law experience.

"I firmly believe that we needed a firm with broad municipal experience," Johnson said. "There are several things that we have been guided on by Karl that show we need someone with that experience."

Two firms were considered during a replacement for
Ottosen — Mahoney, Silverman and Cross and Ancel Glink. The latter also represents the Oswegoland Park District, and it was that fact that led to the final decision to hire Silverman's firm, Johnson said.

"I didn't want to hire any firms that represented any other government bodies in town," Johnson said. "We had that with Karl's firm also representing the the School District. We need someone who will have the village's interest as their top priority."

Mahoney, Silverman and Cross represented Johnson and several trustee candidates earlier this year in the village's protracted legal battle over who would appear on the April election ballot. Silverman previously represented the village from 1999 to 2007. Johnson said it was important to her to hire someone who is familiar with the village.

"I think there is a great benefit of having someone who knows all the players in our community," she said. "I guess I could have gone out and hired someone green without experience, but I don't think that would be in the best interest of the village."
