A 2011 graduate of Oswego High School died suddenly last week while studying abroad in Germany.
According to the IES Study Abroad program, Ixchel Deck passed away in her residence hall May 7. Deck was a junior at St. Xavier University in Chicago studying International Affairs in Freiberg, Germany.
“IES Abroad is doing and will continue to do everything we can to support Ixchel’s family, friends and fellow students, who remain our entire focus,” said Dr. Mary M. Dwyer, president and CEO of IES Abroad. “Our deepest sympathies, thoughts, and prayers are with Ixchel’s family and friends.”
An online fundraiser has been launched to help Deck’s family deal with the financial struggles of paying for her burial and bringing her back home. So far, more than $2,400 has been raised in just five days. The goal is $10,000. To contribute, click here.
"Ixchel was smart, funny, beautiful, and overall a great joy to be around," says a message left on the fundraising page. "She brightened up everyone's day in an instant. Though she was tons of fun to be around, she was also a great listener and had unconditional love for her family and friends. Though we have heavy hearts, we can't help but celebrate Ixchel's inspiring life and want to make sure she is remembered the way she should be."
According to an online profile, Deck was currently employed at the Oswego Walgreen’s and had previously worked as a teaching assistant in classrooms with students with autism at Southbury Elementary School.
