Norah Flaherty, a junior at Oswego High School, was named the winner Illinois State Optimist Oratorical Contest May 10 at Starved Rock State Park in Oglesby.

Flaherty and Saumya Jain of Naperville, both took Runner-Up at the Northern Regional Optimist Oratorical Contest. Both contestants represented the Optimist Club of Oswegoland and advanced to the state competition.

The 2014 Optimist Oratorical Contest was based on the theme of “How My Passions Impact the World”.

“Both Norah and Saumya did a wonderful job presenting their speeches, said Club President Cathy Katz. “The members of the Oswego Optimist Club are proud that both students represent our community and we know they both have tremendous futures ahead of them.”

Editor's note: This article has been changed to reflect the correct high school that Norah attends.
