Controversial Gas Station Annexation Facing Village Board Vote

According to the board agenda, trustees will consider the annexation agreement that would bring the station into Oswego village limits.
Residents near the proposed station, Aurora Alderman Ed Bugg and representatives of Speedway appeared before the Village Board March 18 during a sometimes contentious annexation hearing in which many concerns were raised and questions answered.
Residents questioned everything from traffic safety and congestion to the safety of local school children who likely would attempt to walk to the proposed location on the northeast corner of the highly traveled intersection. Plans call for a Speedway gas station/convenience store that would include enough room for semis to fill their tanks.
Speedway representatives insisted the station will not increase Route 30 truck traffic, and only will capitalize on existing traffic counts.
Residents also argued the lack of a plan for left-turn lanes into the station would cause further traffic backups at the already congested intersection.
The Illinois Department of Transportation has jurisdiction over the intersection, and the state is only requiring right-hand turn lanes into the station off of northbound Route 30 and westbound Wolf’s Crossing Road.
Speedway plans to spend nearly $1 million on local public infrastructure improvements before the station is even built. Those improvements also include the extension of underground water and sewer lines.
Tuesday night's Village Board meeting begins at 7 p.m. at Village Hall, 100 Parker's Mill Road.
