Sep 16, 2014 04:29PM ● Published by Steven Jack

Oswego High School senior Courtney Gardner has been named a semifinalist in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program and has an opportunity to continue in the National Merit Scholarship competition.

Officials of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced the names of approximately 16,000 semifinalists in the 60th annual National Merit Scholarship program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth about $33 million that will be offered next spring.

To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition. About 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and more than half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.

To become a finalist, the semifinalist must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about the semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received.

National Merit Scholar winners for 2015 will be announced beginning in April.

Courtney is the daughter of Steve and Laurie Gardner.
