The 2015 Blues on Barton 5K and Fun Run is set for Saturday, Aug. 1, and this year will benefit three local families who have battled or are currently fighting cancer.
Sonja Staelgraeve was diagnosed with lung cancer, and recently had one of her lungs removed. Brittney Nguyen, a single mother of two, is battling Stage 4 liver cancer, and the Ruiz family, who recently lost their 8-year-old son to a Neuroblastoma in his brain.
A full 90 percent of this year's profits will be split between the three families. The final 10 percent will go to fund brain cancer research.
Blues on Barton began in 2011 as an informal fundraiser to help the family of Kerry Anne Engdahl a Churchill Elementary School teacher who died in 2013 after battling ALS. That event raised nearly $1,500.
In its second year the fundraiser brought in almost $2,500 to benefit the family of Eric Lederman who passed away in April 2012.
The 2013 event was the first year for the 5K run and brought in almost $17,000 for the family of Kyla Hartigan, a Churchill Elementary student with Cerebral Palsy.
In 2014 over $14,000, was raised for Caitlin's Promise, nonprofit organization dedicated to the fight against Neurofibromatosis, and for the family of Matt Robbie who is battling Hodgkin’s Disease.
"Everyone is welcome. Fast, slow, walkers, gawkers, makes no difference," said organizer Justin Sather. "(We're) raising money for families who have dealt with the horrible effects of cancer."
The race is also still accepting sponsors. Those interested may contact Sather at firstname.lastname@example.org
