Old Post Elementary School Receives National Honor

Old Post Elementary School has been named a National Blue Ribbon School for 2015 by the U.S. Department of Education.

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced 2015's 335 National Blue Ribbon Schools on Tuesday.

National Blue Ribbon Schools are recognized in one of two categories, based on all student scores, subgroup student scores, and graduation rates:
  • Exemplary High Performing Schools are among their state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally-normed tests. Student subgroup performance and high school graduation rates are also at the highest levels.
  • Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools are among their state’s highest performing schools in closing achievement gaps between a school’s subgroups and all students over the past five years. Student subgroup performance and high school graduation rates for each subgroup are at high levels.
“This is the first time in the history of School District 308 that a school has received the coveted honor of being named a National Blue Ribbon School,” said Superintendent Matthew Wendt. “I am so proud of the administration, teachers, staff, students and families at Old Post Elementary School and the district personnel who have supported the school in all improvement efforts.”

Earlier this year, the Illinois State Board of Education nominated Old Post Elementary School in the category of Exemplary High-Performing School.

To be nominated, the elementary school needed to demonstrate that performance of all tested students within the most recent year was in the top 15 percent of all schools in the state in both reading and mathematics. Once nominated, Old Post Elementary School was required to submit a comprehensive application.
