A portion of Route 34 in Oswego has been named in honor of Leon McNair, the former director of Fox Bend Golf Course.
If you've driven down Route 34 in Oswego in the last couple of weeks, you're sure to have noticed the signs designating a portion of the road the "Leon McNair Highway."
This October, the Illinois Department of Transportation, by direction of Gov. Bruce Rauner, designated Route 34 from Wolf’s Crossing Road to Douglas Road as the “Leon McNair Highway” to celebrate McNair’s induction into the Illinois Golf Hall of Fame.
Working on the crew of golf course architect-builder Brent Wadsworth, McNair helped build Fox Bend Golf Course in Oswego and was asked by Wadsworth to be the course’s Head Golf Professional when the course opened in 1967. McNair spent his professional career at Fox Bend as the Director of Golf and Manager of the course until his retirement in 2005.
McNair has been the recipient of numerous awards over the years and has served on a variety of PGA committees. He has also focused on the charitable side of the game, serving on the board of directors of the First Tee of Aurora & Fox River Valley and as the current president of the Wadsworth Golf Charities Foundation.
Selection for induction into the Illinois Golf Hall of Fame is conducted biennially by the Hall of Fame Selection Committee. McNair was selected for induction in 2015, and joins a group of individuals who have played significant roles in the history, tradition, and growth of the game of golf in Illinois.
McNair was born in Amsterdam, New York on May 15, 1941. He and his family moved to Illinois where he attended Glenbard West High School. While in high school, he received the Most Valuable Player Award in Golf in 1959 and 1960.
McNair went on to attend Southern Illinois University where he was a member of the five-man golf team that won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 1964. In 1966, he received a degree in advertising and public relations from the university.
A community Open House will be held from 2-4 p.m. at Pearce’s Restaurant at Fox Bend Golf Course, 3516 Route 34 in Oswego, on Sunday, Nov. 15 to recognize McNair for this honor and celebrate his professional accomplishments and contributions to the game of golf in Oswegoland.
