Oswego Robotics and School District 308 will be hosting a FIRST LEGO League qualifying tournament and FIRST LEGO League Jr. Expo on Sunday, Dec. 13, at Oswego East High School.  Opening Ceremonies for the FLL Qualifier will begin at 9 am, and the Jr.FLL Expo at noon. Awards and Recognition ceremonies will begin at 3:30 PM.

The FIRST LEGO League (FLL) program introduces students in grades 4 through 8 to real-world engineering challenges by designing, building, and programming a robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS® to complete tasks on a thematic playing field. FLL Teams, guided by their imaginations and adult coaches, discover exciting career possibilities and, through the process, learn to make positive contributions to society. Four teams will advance to 1 of our 2 state championships.

FIRST LEGO League Jr. (Jr.FLL) is designed to introduce STEM concepts to kids ages 6 to 9 while exciting them through a brand they know and love − LEGO®.  Guided by two or more adult Coaches, teams of up to 6 members in grades K-3 explore a real-world scientific problem. Then they create a Show Me poster that illustrates their journey of discovery and introduces their team. They also construct a motorized model of what they learned using LEGO elements. Teams gather at regional Expo events to present and share what they have learned through their discovery process.

Teams are collecting aluminum tabs from soda and juice cans as part of an Illinois-wide FIRST community outreach program with Ronald McDonald Charities. Visitors are encouraged to bring can tabs to the event in a sealed baggie to help out this noble charity.

The event is free to the public. Snacks and refreshments will be available for purchase. For more information about FIRST Programs, please visit: http://www.firstinspires.org. If you have questions regarding the event, please contact Katra Knoernschild at katra@churchillfirst.org.
