Kendall Sheriff Warns of Latest Scam

Dec 17, 2015 09:47AM ● Published by Steven Jack

The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office again is warning residents of another recently discovered telephone scam.

Sheriff’s Deputies took a report Dec. 16 from a resident who called to verify a phone call received from an individual claiming to be “Officer Matthew Jones” with the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office. The individual related to the complainant that a “complaint had been filed with the IRS,” and to call a different phone number back or risk being arrested.

The complainant contacted the sheriff's office immediately, and did not call the number back. The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office phone number had been displayed on the complainant’s caller ID, presumably by utilizing a common tactic among scammers called “Spoofing,”where through computer software, a specific telephone number will be displayed on caller IDs.

The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office would like to ensure that citizens are aware of this scam, and that phone calls regarding “IRS complaints” are never handled by our office. Personal information should never be given out over the phone.

Sheriff’s Office personnel will never request money over the phone. Should citizens receive a phone call from an individual claiming to be with the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office regarding IRS business, we ask that they contact our office immediately at (630) 553-5856 to file a Police report, or to verify the authenticity of the Deputy contacting them.
