A national brand is currently in negotiations to possibly take over the former Oswego Dominick’s location.

According to Vijay Gadde, Oswego’s Economic Development Director, village officials met earlier this month with the president of Jewel/Osco to discuss a “qualified prospect” that has shown interest in opening in several Chicago-area abandoned Dominick’s locations. The former Oswego Dominick’s location was sold by Safeway to Jewel/Osco last March.

Gadde said it could be several months before any progress is announced, and the identity of the retailer is still being kept under wraps.

“All they said it is a ‘new market entry’ (national brand) looking at several Dominick’s stores in the area,” he said.

Another piece of good news for the Oswego space is that Jewel/Osco has eased its policy of not allowing grocery stores to open in the nine Chicago-area Dominick’s locations it purchased last year.

The Oswego Dominick’s closed in 2013, and has sat empty ever since. Earlier this year the village of Oswego joined a coalition of nine other Chicago-area communities working to fill vacant Dominick’s grocery store buildings. Gadde said the latest “qualified prospect” was obtained through the work of the coalition.

“This a direct result of the regional marketing initiative that was formed earlier in 2015 with 8 other communities,” he said.

Meat market eyeing Oswego

In other Oswego economic development news, a locally owned meat market is hoping to open in Oswego this spring. Gadde said a lease has not been signed, but the owners are looking at space at the Oswego Plaza on the southwest corner of Route 71 and Plainfield Road.

Oswego's Economic Development Commission next week will discuss a request by the market's owners for funding assistance through the village's revolving loan fund, Gadde said.
