String of Oswego-Area Robberies Leads to Increased Police Patrols

Oswego Police have stepped up patrols across the area as five Oswego-area businesses have been robbed in recent months.

Police Chief Jeff Burgner said Tuesday patrol officers and the department's criminal intelligence team have increased their presence at businesses that are open late night and 24 hours, as the majority of the robberies have taken place in the late evening or early morning hours.

“This is about being seen in those thoroughfares during the times when these have been occurring,” Burgner said.

The recent string of burglaries began at about 11:30 p.m.  Oct. 29 when the
Arby’s restaurant at 240 Douglas Road was robbed at gunpoint by two men wearing masks. The next occurred about a month later when a man entered the 7-11 at 2 Merchants Drive at 3:15 a.m. armed with a handgun and wearing a mask.

At about 11 p.m. Dec. 23 two men armed with a gun and wearing masks robbed the Gas Mart USA at 2501 Light Road. A little over a week later two masked men armed with screwdrivers robbed the Marathon gas station at 1 Boulder Hill Pass at about 4:20 a.m. Finally, two masked men, again armed with screwdrivers, held up the Subway restaurant at 320 Douglas Road at about 5:15 p.m. Jan. 1.

Burgner said it’s possible the robberies are related, but gathering concrete suspect descriptions has been a challenge.

“So far we don’t have really good surveillance video to go off of,” he said. “… Do I think there’s a chance these could be related? Absolutely, I’m comfortable saying that.”

Burgner said similar robberies also have been occurring in Aurora and Naperville, and investigators have been working closely with those departments, as well as the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office.

“We are sharing information on a regular basis to see what if any connections can be made in all of these,” he said.

Anyone with any information about any of the local robberies is asked to call the Oswego Police Department at
(630) 551-7300 or the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office at (630) 553-5856. Callers who wish to remain anonymous can contact the Kendall County Crimestoppers at (630) 553-5999.
