If you’re raising your family in Oswego, you made a smart choice, according to one recent study.

The village recently landed at No. 14 on personal finance resource site Wallet Hub's 2016 list of Best Cities for Illinois Families. Joining Oswego in the top 20 were suburbs including Naperville (No. 10), Lake in the Hills (No. 8) and nearby Yorkville (No. 11).

Village President Gail Johnson said she wasn’t surprised by the study, which rated towns based on family life and fun; education, health and safety; affordability; and socioeconomic environment.

“I think we always knew that,” Johnson said of Oswego’s status among the best places to raise a family. “That’s why I raised mine here. ... Oswego has that mix of suburban and rural,” she said, including spots along the Fox River to enjoy nature. “There’s always something to do.”

Johnson also said cooperation among local agencies, from the school and park districts to the police and fire departments, make Oswego attractive.

It’s not the first time Oswego has gotten accolades for being family friendly. Last year, NerdWallet made the village its No. 6 pick on its list of 10 Best Cities for Young Families in Illinois.

The Wallet Hub study gave towns points for factors including number of playgrounds and attractions, percentage of families with kids under age 18, average commute time, quality of the school system, high school graduate rate, violent crime rate, property crime rate, housing affordability, separation and divorce rate, unemployment rate and foreclosure rate.
