Beekeeping Topic of Upcoming Oswego Museum Program

Learn all about the “Benefits and Joys of Beekeeping” at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 5, at Oswego’s Little White School Museum kicks. Bee evangelist Dr. Ed Bell, owner of Bellfry Bees and Honey, will explain the joys and benefits to the environment of this ancient hobby. Admission is $5. Proceeds benefit the museum. The winter/spring program series at Oswego’s Little White School Museum continues at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 5, with “Benefits and Joys of Beekeeping.”

The museum is located at 72 Polk Street (Jackson at Polk Street), just two blocks from historic downtown Oswego.

Dr. Ed Bell, owner of Bellfry Bees and Honey, will explain the ins and outs of managing home honeybee hives, and the sweet benefits of beekeeping, a hobby that keeps on giving. Suburban beekeeping is a growing hobby and hives can be successfully maintained even in suburban subdivisions. For instance, the City of Yorkville allows beekeeping in city limits as an accessory use.

According to Bell, are the only insects to produce food for humans, account for 80 percent of all insect pollination, and are directly responsible for pollination a third of all food crops eaten every day in the United States.

During the program, Bell will explain the ins and outs of starting a backyard bee hive, the current state of local zoning laws concerning beekeeping, and the hobby’s positive environmental impact.

Preregistration is not required. Admission, at the door, is $5.

Regular museum hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.
