A man with a concealed carry license fatally shot a dog that was acting aggressively towards a person and another dog Saturday at an unincorporated Montgomery park, police said.
Kendall County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Mike Mrozek said police were dispatched to SuzanJohn Park, 29 Hampton Road, at around 2:07 p.m. for a report of a loose dog being aggressive towards a person and a leashed dog.
Deputies arrived at the park to find that the dog, described as a pit bull mix, had been shot once by a man who witnessed the incident from his home near the park.
The witness intervened after witnessing the dog behaving in an aggressive manner, Mrozek said. Neither the person nor the leashed dog were injured in the incident.
The man had a valid Illinois concealed carry license, and immediately unloaded his gun and turned it over to deputies, police said.
The dog, which was killed in the incident, had a history of aggression and biting, according to police.
The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office had previously investigated two incidents earlier this year involving the dog, and the dog’s owner received two citations for no rabies tag and one citation for having a dog running at large, Mrozek said.
One of the previous incidents also resulted in the dog being referred to Kendall County Animal Control for an alleged bite.
Mrozek said the dog’s owner has not been cited in connection with the SuzanJohn Park incident, which remains under investigation.
