Black Dog Distillery Turns a Passion into a Business

“Sit. Stay. Sip.” Keith and Sonya Moore are inviting craft spirits enthusiasts to do just that at their new business, Black Dog Distillery, 10038 Clow Creek Drive in Plainfield.

A member of both the Plainfield and Oswego chambers of commerce, the distillery has been nearly two years in the making. The business will host a grand-opening celebration from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.

"It's going to be a long day," joked Keith Moore, who said his passion for distilling began about five years ago.

“We started looking into opening a distillery after we found out that our building was already zoned for it,” said Moore, who also owns a construction and engineering firm.

“We started looking at it and realized it is feasible to do,” Moore said. After completing the more-than-yearlong federal and state licensing process, Black Dog was ready to begin making small-batch, hand-crafted vodka and white rum.

In additional to traditional spirits, Black Dog offers a lavender vodka and an apple rum. The distillery’s white rum recently took the silver medal at the 2016 Denver International Spirits Competition, Moore said.

The Moores named the distillery in honor of their two miniature schnauzers, who are fondly referred to as the couple’s “fur kids.”

“My big joke is that one of those days those two are going to have to find a way to pay the mortgage,” Moore said. And now, with the distillery, they just might.

While Saturday is the big grand-opening celebration, Moore said the Oswego and Plainfield chamber of commerce ribbon cuttings served as soft openings for the business, which offers a retail store and tasting room.

The grand opening on Saturday is set for 11 to 8 p.m., with live music, food trucks and, of course, craft spirits.

Singer-songwriter JohnnyV is set to perform from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., followed by local musician Mark Hanson from 3 to 7 p.m.

Taco Grill Salsa Bar food truck will be on site from 11 to 3 p.m., and the Cheesie’s food truck will be available for dinner from 4 to 8 p.m.

Regular hours for tours and tastings at the Black Dog Distillery begin next weekend, Moore said.  Tasting room hours are noon to 6 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
