Looking for something to do with your kids this summer?
OEHS graduate and nanny Caitlyn Schroeder launched the Picnic at the Park Friday program on May 20, offering an opportunity for parents to get their kids out of the house for a few hours of fun and games at the Ogden Falls Park playground, 375 Ogden Falls Boulevard.
Picnic at the Park Friday is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fridays all summer long – and possibly into the school year, if there’s enough interest, according to Schroeder.
“Kids need more time outside, less time on the couch playing video games or on the iPad,” said Schroeder, a 2012 Oswego East High School graduate.
She said the program is open to all ages and includes plenty of outdoor fun as well as games and crafts.
So far, the free program is a hit, said Schroeder, who works as a nanny to children ages 4 and 10. The first Picnic at the Park Friday drew 16 participants, she said.
Children must be supervised by their parent or guardian, and are encouraged to bring lunch, a snack, sunscreen and water to drink. Participants are also welcome to bring folding chairs or blankets to sit on, Schroeder added.
Kids who would like to participate in crafts should bring $5 towards the following week’s craft, Schroeder said.
Schroeder has started a GoFundMe page to collection donations to fund the purchase of sand toys, chalk, bubbles, jump ropes, balls and arts and crafts supplies.
Although she brings a small supply of toys, Schroeder said, “Eventually, I’d like to have a pool of toys everyone can use.”
Depending on the response, donations can also eventually help pay for group activities such as water balloon fights, lemonade stand supplies, sunscreen, blankets, first aid supplies and a weekly snack, Scroeder said.
Participants are encouraged but not required to RSVP each week via the Picnic at the Park Friday Facebook page. To ensure that she has enough supplies on hand, Schroeder asked parents to be sure to RSVP if their child plans on participating in crafts.
