Police apprehended an 18-year-old Aurora man who allegedly crashed a stolen truck before attempting to flee from officers on foot early Wednesday.
Esaiah M. Escamilla, of the 2000 block of Best Place, was arrested on charges of possession of a stolen vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident, possession of alcohol by a minor, retail theft, theft and driving without a valid license, police said.
Oswego Police spokeswoman Cathy Nevara said officers were responding to a report of a retail theft in progress at Walmart, 2300 Route 34, at around 12:20 a.m. when police spotted the suspect vehicle heading west on Route 34.
Escamilla allegedly accelerated when he saw police and lost control of the Nissan pickup truck before crashing into a light pole near Route 34 and Heritage Drive, police said. Escamilla and the other occupants of the vehicle then fled on foot, according to police.
Police determined that the vehicle had previously been reported stolen.
Officers apprehended Escamilla a short time later, police said. Nevara said investigators are working to determine how many occupants were in the vehicle and identify them.
According to Nevara, there is no indication that the occupants were injured in the crash.
Police said a bottle of Fireball whiskey and a bottle of Hennessy were reported stolen from Walmart.
