Describe your business FIT4MOM is a franchise that started in California as a way for moms to connect and be able to workout after having kids. We offer Stroller Strides three mornings a week at local parks or at Allied Bank when the weather is not-permitting.
We also offer Body Back classes, which are HIIT-style classes, that also focus on nutrition, in a small group setting for just the moms (or women). These classes are at YOUnique Health in downtown Oswego.
Why did you start your own business? I have a degree in Kinesiology and have been (and currently am) a PE teacher for the last 13 years. I have 5 children and love being active, but have found its so hard to do that with my kids.
I couldn't bring them to workout with me, and I didn't want to put them into childcare rooms after I had been gone all day.. I wanted to hang out with them as much as possible when I wasn't working. I came across FIT4MOM and it was love at first-sight.
A mom's body changes more in 9 months than a man's will in his whole life. And this was a safe place for moms to come together and workout and know they were with other people going through similar life-experiences.
Plus, I was able to work out "with" my kids and demonstrate a healthy-lifestyle for them. I wanted to create a community of moms that included a safe place for them to come and workout.
Tell us something unique about your business We do Stroller Strides, which is a stroller-based workout class (but we have expecting moms in class without strollers, too). We use nursery rhymes, games, bubbles, preschool activities and songs to keep the kiddos entertained while we work out.
Moms think their kids might not sit through class, but we move so much and interact with them constantly, that it's usually not ever an issue! We have kids ages 3 months through 6 years in class!
It was made to be a power-walking class, but some moms run and others walk. Everything is modifiable based off of the moms fitness levels and time post-partum.
What's the best part of owning your own business? The best part had been watching this Village of Moms grow. Being a mom can be lonely sometimes, and starting to workout again after having a baby can be intimidating and overwhelming.
I love that these Oswego-area moms now have such a strong support system. Friendships are being created amongst the moms and kids! We do monthly Moms Night Outs, quarterly service projects, weekly free play dates, and have an online community of support as well. I also love seeing health and fitness goals accomplished.
It's more than just what the scale says. It's how they feel and what they accomplish. I've had moms run their first mile, compete in their first 5ks, drop mile times in races, lose inches, gain muscle tone, increase their energy, lose weight, and overall just feel better. I love seeing and hearing their success stories.
