Parents of students at two Oswego schools expressed their concerns Monday over social media posts from what appeared to be a demented clown character that said he will be coming to Oswego on Tuesday.
"BobbytheClown5062" posted on Instagram Monday: "I'm going to be in Oswego oct. 4 at 5:30pm downtown better be ready." The message spread quickly throughout Thompson and Traughber junior high schools, prompting frightened students to send messages to parents.
Throughout the day several parents called schools and police to report the post. Oswego Police spokeswoman Cathy Nevara said police did take several calls from concerned parents, but did not launch an investigation.
District 308 spokesman Brian Graves said it was determined through an investigation that the posts were a hoax. He could not say whether the person responsible was a District 308 student.
"I can't comment on student related matters," he said. "But I can clearly state this was hoax."
When asked for comment regarding comments left on the Instagram post that appeared to incite disturbing levels of violence in local schools, Graves again said he couldn't comment on specific student matters.
This appears to be a local spawning of the creepy clown phenomenon that is sweeping across the country. Demented clown sightings have been reported all over the United States, and may have gotten their most recent start in Green Bay, Wis. this summer.
While most reported sightings appear to be internet hoaxes, people throughout the country have reported being chased by the clowns. In other cases, clowns have attempted to lure women into wooded areas and offered candy to children.
Other local reported clown sightings have occurred in both Aurora and Plano.
