Musings of an O-Town Mom

Tyler's Mom

They don’t warn you enough about what it’s going to be like when you become a mom. The sleep deprivation is one that they do tell you about but you really have no idea what that feels like until it arrives. I think I would rather be hung over than to be sleep deprived from the crying of a fussy baby. Yet somehow, you find yourself agreeing with the idea of having another baby, and then another, and then…another. Did you know, it’s a form of insanity, doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result? Yeah, that’s me.

I found myself alone 6 years ago. I was a stay at home mom with a 9-month-old baby and a 22-month-old toddler. My husband commuted to work downtown and I ran the household chores and kids. Looking back, I was SO alone. I knew no one out here. The only friends I had, lived in the city and most of them either didn’t have children or had older kids. Our family lived miles away and I think I pretty much called my father daily just to feel like home.

I joined a wonderful moms group who at the time was known as Mothers & More - now known as MOMS & MORE. I walked into their monthly board meeting with a table full of about 14 moms and for the first time, I felt as if I had found my tribe. The meeting started at 6:30 pm, it was supposed to last an hour, and I stayed past it chatting away afterward with 3 other moms until 11 pm! It was the first time in 2 years I had a night that belonged to me. Where I found others who were going through the same stage in life and I didn’t feel so alone. There is a comradery that fellow moms share.

I was a member for close to 6 years and volunteered in the group as a member of the Board. I was an active member discovering things like Recipe Club, Bunco, Playgroups, and their semi-annual Children’s Resale. Who knew that Children’s Resales existed like this? I wish someone would have told me sooner and I would have saved hundreds of dollars! If you’re not familiar with kids’ resales do yourself a favor and search local ones like the Moms & More Children’s Resale. There are so many children’s’ resales around! Did I mention the MOMS & MORE CHILDREN’S RESALE is this Saturday, April 14 from 8 am – 2 pm at Long Beach Elementary (67 Long Beach Road, Montgomery, IL)? If you miss the resale and you just want an evening out they are hosting a New/Prospective Member Cocktails at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, May 1, at Tap House Grill.

I have come to realize that no matter how many warnings or advice I have received in motherhood, finding your tribe is just as important as finding yourself as a mom. Because we change so much from the backgrounds we come from, to the environment we live in, to the experiences we live through just by being moms. I know that I have changed a lot and I see myself continuing to change as the kids get older and become independent.  Just remind yourself how far you have come, the challenges you have faced and overcame, and know that the work isn’t done.
