The year book claims the wording is used to describe their use of blue lipstick, "style to boost their beauty and poise.'" and "...builds [our] confidence." "'No one ugly allowed' came from a song that the coaches chose to hype us up before competitions." says one of the members.
The year book quotes a student as saying "Started as a joke but turned into something we really enjoyed doing."
Although a member of the team said "It means that it's time for us to be beautiful inside and out, both off and on that mat," some of the residents and students have a different opinion. "I mean, even if it was meant as a joke, it's not very funny" says Levi Cull, a local student, "That's discrimination."
One parent of a former student said [she is] "Shocked, ashamed and embarrassed by the Oswego SD...No matter the context, the title is negative, irresponsible and thoughtless."
